Stamp duty extension 'could help first-time buyers'

Britons looking to take their first steps on to the property ladder have been offered some assistance by Alistair Darling, Chancellor of the Exchequer, thanks to the extension of the stamp duty holiday.

As part of this week's Budget, it was announced that stamp duty on properties sold for less than £175,000 would be extended until the end of the year.

Helen Adams, managing director at FirstRungNow.com, said that the fact that it had been extended was "helpful".

However, she added that she did not believe the extension would be permanent.

"I don't imagine [Alistair Darling] will want to give away too much more than he has done already," Ms Adams stated.

Britons looking to get on to the property ladder by purchasing a cheaper home could find that they could increase its value for further down the live with a series of home improvement projects.

Speaking to the Antrim Times, Kieran Lavery, managing director of Camden Group, recently stated that composite doors ( http://www.force8.co.uk/index.php ), conservatories, roofline products and new windows could all boost the "aesthetic and functional requirements" of modern housing.
