Burglars 'enter through conservatories and unsecure doors'

A spate of rural burglaries has led police to urge homeowners to make sure their properties are as secure as possible before they go on holiday.

Homeowners in Hutton, Somerset, have been warned that thieves are breaking into properties not only at night, but during the day too.

PC Dave Eastham suggested that cancelling milk deliveries and turning on security lights could deter would-be thieves from breaking and entering.

However, making sure that conservatories ( http://www.force8.co.uk/conservatories.php ) are fitted with strong doors, as well as keeping patio doors ( http://www.force8.co.uk/ ) securely locked, could be other ways to reduce the risk of being burgled.

"The offender has generally gained access through unlocked conservatories, old windows and insecure back doors ( http://www.force8.co.uk/ )," PC Eastham stated.

Manchester residents may be particularly keen to install strong doors and secure their conservatories ( http://www.force8.co.uk/conservatories.php ) after the city was revealed as having the highest rate of burglaries.

Figures show that there are 35 burglaries per 1,000 homes in Manchester.
