Arched windows 'show carpenter's art'

The arched windows of a Spitalfields property highlight the artistry of the carpenter who constructed them, reports Country Life.

Arched windows for modern properties can be made to the homeowner's own design by companies such as Stockportdouble glazing supplier Force 8.

However, when 27 Fournier Street was built in the early 18th century, it was less easy to feature the subtly arched windows that appear in the lower three storeys of the property.

Above, a final fourth floor features a parapet wall with its own windows - this time in a conventional rectangular design - that allow the light to flood in.

Country Life adds that the curved heads of the lower windows would have been "more costly, stylish and skilful" to make.

This, it says, is "a testament to the carpenter's art", adding that such windows would have been "seldom made after the middle of the 18th century".
