Older people in the UK have been advised to consider insulation - which may include composite
doors and double glazing - by one group in an effort to reduce the number of excess
winter deaths which occur each year as a result of the cold.
The Office for National Statistics has revealed that between 2008-09, there were
an estimated 36,700 excess winter deaths in England and Wales - an increase of 49 per cent on the previous year's figures.
In light of this,
confused.com is urging older Britons to take advantage of free insulation schemes which may be available to them.
It explains that people
aged over 70 are eligible for a 100 per cent grant for loft and cavity wall insulation, which can make a property warmer and as a result cheaper to
heat.
Elderly households may also wish to consider composite doors and double glazing, both of which can keep more heat inside than timber front doors and single glazing, which could see them paying for themselves over time through
cheaper heating bills.
