Double glazing a 'long-term investment'

When it comes to home improvements, one group has claimed that double glazing should be viewed as a long-term investment, as it can lower energy bills and increase insulation.

Low Carbon Economy claims that Britons who dig out their toolboxes and spend some time on a DIY project could not only add value to their properties, but also shave money off their energy bills.

Citing recent research by the Energy Saving Trust, the website notes that carrying out environmental renovations could see Britons collectively saving £220 million a year and 1.2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide.

Along with double glazing, the website advises fitting draught excluders to doors as one useful DIY job that could boost insulation and save money on energy bills.

However, when it comes to exterior doors, homeowners may wish to pay a visit to Stockportdouble glazing supplier Force 8.

At the store they can choose from a range of composite doors, which, because they are not made from timber, do not twist, warp or crack in wet weather to allow draughts in.

Force 8 supplies a full range of arched and composite doors.

Readers of the Daily Record have been told to think of double glazing as an investment, rather than an expense.

The publication explains that double glazing can have a significant impact on utility bills by preventing heat loss from the home.

Double glazing "will make a big difference to bills over time", article author Collette Walsh says.

"Heat loss through windows is cut by 50 per cent, which will save you about £100 a year on bills," she adds.

Meanwhile, after installing new windows there are some simple steps that can maximise the return on investment that is recouped.

For instance, just closing the curtains at dusk can help to make sure heat is not lost through the windows as the temperature outside drops.

The £100 estimate could be conservative compared with figures from the Energy Saving Trust, which places the cost benefits of double glazing at £140 per year for the average home.
