Three million households in the UK have found themselves the target of distraction burglars in the last five years, which may prompt them to invest in
additional security for their exterior doors.
According to research by Sainsbury's Home
Insurance, the average victim lost items valued at an average of £1,230 following such a break-in, although less than half of those burgled
reported the incident to the police.
A distraction burglary is carried out when a thief calls at the front door and poses as someone else in order to gain access to the property, or to distract the homeowners while their partner
sneaks into the house by checking for any unlocked external
doors.
Ben Tyte, manager of Sainsbury's Home Insurance, said: "We'd strongly recommend that homeowners take basic steps to protect
themselves, whether this is by using a door bar or chain or simply contacting an organisation if a caller arrives unscheduled.
Consumers may
also wish to consider composite doors from Cheshiredouble glazing supplier Force 8, which boast a five-point
locking system and have been vigorously tested to ensure they stand up to force.
Force 8
supply a full range of arched and composite doors.
