An untidy property can in the neighbourhood can "seriously affect" nearby house prices, according to one sector commentator, although it
could be said that fitting a new composite door or double glazing is one way to smarten the area up.
A spokesperson for LV=Insurance
explained that even if the unkempt property is within 50 metres of a house that is for sale it could have an impact on its price.
"If
you are looking to move, it's worthwhile having a look up and down the street and not just at the property you are looking to buy," she
warned.
The representative noted that every homeowner has a "duty of care" and that this meant they had a right to speak to any
neighbours who were not keeping their own house in a presentable condition - such as making sure drains were clear or gardens were
overgrown.
However, homeowners who wish to improve the facade of their own property may wish to invest in composite doors and PVC windows, which not only look attractive, but could also allow potential buyers to turn down their central heating and save on their
energy bills as draughts will be kept to a minimum.
