Congratulations was not the word Cliff Richard heard when he was contacted by Runnymede borough council telling him to take his conservatory
down.
The singer has received an enforcement notice from the local authority after he built the extension - worth £30,000 - at his
Surrey property without planning permission.
And the new conservatory reportedly increased Sir Cliff's floor space by over 30 per cent, which
the council claimed was a "disproportionate addition".
It was also noted that the development could be harmful to the green belt
area where the popstar's home is situated.
Geoffrey Woodger, planning committee chairman for the council, said it was "regrettable that
Sir Cliff's agent did not check whether the conservatory needed planning permission before proceeding", the BBC reports.
However, the
singer is expected to appeal the decision.
Homeowners wishing to add their own conservatories may wish to learn from Sir Cliff's mistake by ensuring they go through the correct planning channels.
