How bi-folding doors could open up a home

As property prices rise, mortgage loans become harder to access and the credit crunch continues to put pressure on spending, many Britons may be forced to stay in a home which feels small and cramped - but bi-folding doors or conservatories may rectify this.

According to the Times, research by Savills has revealed homeowners are now likely to stay in one property for 17 years, meaning improving rather than moving has become more of a priority.

The newspaper's Susan Emmett explains that as moving may not be a realistic option, Britons should take other steps to increase the space of their home and that there is likely to be a solution for every budget.

She spoke to Martyn Clarke, of Martyn Clarke Architecture, who said Victorian terrace houses - which are a common property type in the North West - can be dark and not feel spacious, but extensions such as conservatories may rectify this.

"By creating a side extension or a back extension, you not only increase square footage but also create the feeling of space by using lots of glass and opening the back of the house to the garden," he said.

Composite bi-folding doors from double glazing supplier Force 8 may be another wise consideration if Britons do not have permission for an extension, as these can create a bridge between the home and garden, resulting in a feeling of increased space and light.
