More Britons 'building own conservatories'

As the credit crunch rumbles on, home improvements may have become an increasing priority with Britons, as more people opt to build conservatories, without seeking the services of tradespeople, a survey has found.

According to the YouGov poll commissioned by Lloyds TSB, building conservatories were among the most popular DIY construction jobs, along with demolishing walls and converting lofts.

Furthermore, one in ten respondents said the motive behind their home improvements was to increase the value of their property amid the difficult housing market conditions.

However, 66 per cent of people carrying out major structural work admit to not following official building guidelines, while 81 per cent failed to check whether building materials were of a suitable standard, risking breaching energy efficiency regulations.

Andrew Leech, director of the National Home Improvement Council, said: "If you're doing anything more than decorating or repainting the property then you need to call a professional in to look at what you want to do, to give you advice."

Britons may also be able to seek advice by visiting Stockportdouble glazing supplier Force 8, which offers a range of conservatories which could suit any property.
