Homeowners should ensure they use the security chains on their front doors if they receive a
caller they are not expecting as this could reduce the risk of them falling victim to a distraction burglary, it has been claimed.
The St
Helens Star reports that a series of such burglaries have taken place in the area, where thieves have posed as officials in order to gain access to a
person's home.
As a result, police have urged homeowners to always ask to be shown official ID by any caller, while consumers could also call
the company the visitor claims to represent to check they are telling the truth.
Furthermore, rear exterior doors should always be locked before answering front doors, in order
to keep out any thieves who could enter the home while the owner is distracted by the caller.
Detective Inspector Ged Seddon, of St Helens
Police, said: "Residents should also make use of door chains if they have them, make a call to the organisation the caller claims to be from to
double-check who they are."
He added that if in doubt, Britons should simply ask the visitor to return later, or ignore the call
altogether.
