Do windows hold answer to better night's sleep?

Excess street lighting has been found to disturb people's sleep and while curtains and blackout blinds may help keep bedrooms dark, homeowners with French doors leading to a balcony in their bedroom may have trouble keeping such lighting out.

A study by Campaign to Protect Rural England has discovered that 50 per cent of the people it polled that had encountered problems with light pollution revealed that artificial light had disrupted their sleep.

As a result, the group, along with the Astronomical Association's Campaign for Dark Skies, is calling for councils and businesses to reduce their use of artificial lighting.

Meanwhile, Jessica Alexander from The Sleep Council, said that while light does have an effect on people's sleep patterns, there are steps they can take.

"The obvious answer to that is to get thicker curtains or use blackout blinds in combination with each other," she explained.

People with doors leading to a balcony in their bedroom may wish to consider French doors from Cheshiredouble glazing supplier Force 8.

The fixtures come with the option of inbuilt Venetian blind doorlites, which could be the perfect way of keeping unwanted light to a minimum, in addition to being easy maintenance and simple to clean.
