Manchester residents may wish to consider updating their home security after new figures reveal
the city tops the list of areas with the most burglaries in England and Wales.
The Conservative Party analysed official crime statistics and
found Manchester to have the highest rate of burglaries. Nottingham was second on the
list.
Shadow home secretary Chris Grayling said: "This increase in burglaries is a big problem and it's not just down to the
recession."
Homeowners can take steps to increase the security of their properties, however. Ensuring windows and doors have adequate locks could be one way to help improve security levels on
a property.
The figures suggest there were 35 burglaries for every 1,000 homes in Manchester. Detective Chief Superintendent Russ Jackson, head of Greater Manchester Police's drive to tackle burglary, said that the force is continuing to work hard to cut this number.
There has
been a 40 per cent drop in burglary since 2000, he said.
