When considering having a basement conversion, Britons have been advised that lighting the space is a "fundamental issue", which may prompt
homeowners to ensure that windows or a double glazing light pipe is installed as part of the building process.
According to the Times, when building a basement
conversion, Britons should remember it will be a gloomy environment and this should either be turned to their household's advantage - by using it as a
cinema or gym - or installing light wells.
Light wells are able to illuminate the space using natural light, meaning people do not have to
rely on lightbulbs when they are using the conversion, however, they do require planning permission.
The Times warns that a basement
conversion is likely to cost a lot of money, take a significant time period, encounter planning permission difficulties and even lead to disputes with
the neighbours, advising that people think carefully before beginning such a project.
With this in mind, consumers may find that conservatories are an easier and more economical way to add living space to their
home.
