Many Britons are continuing to struggle with their energy bills, despite government schemes to ease this pressure, it has been said - although double glazing could help people save money.
The Energy and Climate Change
Committee, a cross-party group of MPs, recently warned that the government was at risk of missing its targets for pulling vulnerable people out of
fuel poverty this year and ending the problem by 2016.
Commenting on the news, Scott Byrom, utilities manager moneysupermarket.com, said MPs'
best laid plans appeared to be "out of reach", which was a "chilling" prospect.
He added that the site had recently
discovered 78 per cent of Britons were struggling to pay for their utilities and that action needed to be taken to prevent fuel poverty from
escalating.
"There is no doubt the round of tiny price cuts from the Big Six this year are cold comfort to bill payers still reeling
from unprecedented winter fuel bills - especially as there are more freezing temperatures forecast," he added.
In addition to price
cuts, improving the energy efficiency of a home could also help people bring down the cost of their bills.
The Energy Saving Trust recommends
double glazing is one of the best ways of achieving this, as it reduces heat lost
through windows by half, allowing people to turn down their heating and stay
warm.
