Double glazing 'can have big impact'

Double glazing is among the most high-impact moves that homeowners can make to improve their energy efficiency, it has been noted.

Guardian reader Joelle tells the publication that she has been looking into the steps that can be taken to reduce power consumption.

Her efforts are part of the 10:10 campaign, which encourages homeowners to cut their consumption of energy by a tenth.

Joelle tells the Guardian's green expert Leo Hickman that double glazing ranks alongside replacing inefficient fridges and washing machines as the single biggest steps that can cut energy consumption.

For eco-conscious homeowners, the publication explains that the average household produces 14 tonnes of CO2 each year.

Therefore, to meet the 10:10 challenge, families need to reduce their contributions to greenhouse gases by 1.4 tonnes.

Households which inhabit larger properties - particularly detached houses - could have more to save in order to reach their personal targets, the Guardian adds.
