It is "essential" more government support is offered to first-time buyers to help them secure their own home, it has been said - while
consumers should look out for fixtures such as double glazing if they wish to ensure
their utility bills stay low.
Rebecca Roberts-Hughes, research officer at Metropolitan Home Ownership, increasingly buyers are unable to
purchase their first home outright, meaning shared ownership is their only alternative.
"The new shared ownership lease will encourage
lenders, but we need to see more support for the intermediate market from both government and lenders," she added.
Ms Roberts-Hughes
went on to note that Britons are beginning to realise that there are many good quality new homes they could choose to purchase.
New
properties are more likely to have features such as double glazing than period
properties.
Double glazing and fixtures such as composite doors can help to keep utility bills down through the insulation they provide, which
could see homeowners left with more cash to out towards paying off their mortgage.
The average first-time buyer property increased in value
by 0.3 per cent in April and now stands at £155,242, its highest level since February 2009, according to new figures from
FindaProperty.com.
