Unlike double glazing, a single glazed window "wastes a huge amount of energy and therefore costs" according to one newspaper reader.
In a letter to
the Guardian, Hermine Klungler from Chipping Norton asserted that she felt it was time for energy efficiency and property conservation to stop being a
contradiction of each other.
She added that it has always surprised her why landlords who own older properties do not upgrade the existing windows to double glazing
due to the age of the building.
Ms Klungler asked: "Why not replace these windows with bespoke new ones fabricated to look like the old ones? Where is the problem? Why not support this with government
funding? Maybe councils and the government need to be made aware of this?"
Indeed, Britons who do not live in listed homes can find that
they can boost their insulation by investing in composite doors with double glazing, which are made from a material more durable than wood but which has the
appearance of timber.
However, in response to her letter, Stephanie Clements, from Farnham, stated that she had encountered problems with
installing double glazing when renovating a property as it was listed.
In the
end, she was given permission to install interior secondary glazing.
