Rather than charging people a green tax for their consumption of utilities, households should be taught the best ways to reduce their energy use, one
sector commentator has claimed.
Rebecca Atkinson, news editor at Moneywise, was speaking after the government, in partnership with think tank
the Green Fiscal Commission, proposed applying a green tax to the cost of household utilities.
It is believed that such an initiative would
see the UK cutting its carbon emissions in line with government targets, but would also see the duty rising every year.
Ms Atkinson claimed
that this would come at a time when many consumers were already struggling to meet their increasing energy bills.
"There needs to be
more education about how families can reduce their energy usage - which would save them money and be beneficial to the environment - rather than
introducing more taxation on essential costs," she urged.
Britons may therefore be interested to learn of the benefits double glazing can make to their energy use.
The Energy Saving Trust asserts that
double glazing can reduce heat lost through windows by up to 50 per cent, allowing people to turn down their central heating and still enjoy a cosy home.
