As the credit crunch rumbles on, the UK is facing mounting debt, leading to calls for public spending to be cut in an effort to boost
funds.
In an article for the Guardian, Peter Tatchell notes that welcoming in a "Green New Deal" could result in savings amounting
to some £160 billion and that energy efficient fixtures and fitting, such as double
glazing, are one way of achieving this.
Meanwhile, expensive national projects, such as the construction of weapons of war and the
computerisation of the NHS could be scrapped, he adds.
Some of the money saved could then be put towards a "Roosevelt-style Green New
Deal" to help stimulate the economy, Mr Tatchell explains.
"The government's 2002 Energy review advised that the UK could cut its
energy needs by a third through a comprehensive programme of energy conservation in homes, offices and factories, including double-glazing," he
notes.
But just how could double glazing be a money-saver?
According
to the Energy Saving Trust, double glazing can cut the amount of heat lost through windows by 50 per cent, which in turn allows people to turn down their heating and reduce
their spending on energy.
